ROGER JOB, TURKANA'S of KENYA |
THE FIRST LAST MEN |
Roger Job last piece of work is about the Turkana pastoralists facing climate change in Kenya. This photography project started with first picture taken in September 2008 and finished by the last one in July 2010, aims to highlight the impact of climate change on the Turkana pastoralists in north Kenya. There are a group of people who have been living for ages tending to their livestock. They live far away from towns and the modern world but their way of life has always been one of freedom, pride and in perfect harmony with nature. Goats, sheep, cows, donkeys and camels used to provide them with milk and meat in plenty. But for a few years, the wet season has been shorter and poor in rain. In their daily life, the Turkana have already begun to feel the impact of climate change and this is set to worsen significantly. These nomadic people already have difficulty accessing water points and pastures for their cattle and their way of life that has largely been intact for some 6,000 years is likely to be destroyed. My work as a photographer aims not only to show the impact of climate change on the Turkana but also to document a way of life that is likely to disappear within a span of a generation. This is a long work as I went 8 times to Kenya to complete the documentation and to have all the images ready for an exhibition which is taking place at the Charleroi Museum of Photography (Belgium) from September, 25, 2010 to January, 16, 2011. The work is also published at the same time in a book of 166 pages and available (in French only(so far)) at the Museum. |
